Steak Seasoning

Steak seasoning is easy enough to create at home using some of the most basic spices in your collection.

  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp paprika

Additional complimentary spices:

  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ⅛ tsp cayenne pepper
  • ½ tsp brown sugar
  • ⅛ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp thyme

Mix ingredients together to season 1-2 steaks on the skillet, grill or in a marinade.  To create a marinade, combine with 1-2 Tbsps olive oil.  Place the marinade and steaks into a zip-close bag and leave it in the fridge overnight or for several hours before cooking.

Seasoned Hamburgers

  • 2 lbs thawed ground meat, such as beef or turkey
  • Steak Seasoning (above)

  1. Mix steak seasoning together in a mixing bowl.
  2. Thoroughly mix the seasoning into the meat using your hands, or skip this step if you prefer to season the outside of the patty.
  3. Using your hands, form ¼” thick patties and place them in a pan or on a grill preheated to low/medium.
  4. Brown the outsides (a few  minutes on each side).  If you have not already seasoned the meat, sprinkle the seasoning on each side during this step.  Cook 5-10 minutes longer or until the insides reach your preferred level of doneness.

TIP:  You can also freeze the uncooked patties between sheets of wax paper to cook later.  Frozen patties do not have to be thawed before cooking.  If grilling ground turkey, it is best to freeze the patties first and grill straight from frozen, since it may not hold its shape well on a grill in thawed form.

Meaty Hash

Hash is basically seasoned meat and potatoes.  You may be familiar with corned beef hash.  Often times families will create one large meal using a mixture of their meat, potato and other vegetable leftovers and bring them together with a seasoning.  It’s a great way to stretch the food budget.  Or if you’d like to make new hash just because you like how it tastes, use the recipe below.

  • 2 lbs precooked meat (such as roast beef or pulled pork), OR unseasoned ground meat (beef, turkey, pork)
  • 7-8 medium peeled russet potatoes, chopped to ¾” – 1” pieces
  • 2 cups unsweetened original cashew milk (you can also use another milk substitute – cashew is recommended because it is creamier
  • First four steak seasoning ingredients x 3

  1. In a large soup pot, brown meat at medium heat.  If you are using precooked roast meat, skip this step and add meat during step 2.
  2. Add milk, potatoes and spices to large soup pot.  Turn heat to low/medium and cook 25-30 minutes, or until potatoes are soft.  Check every several minutes and stir.
  3. When the potatoes are soft, mash part of them with a potato masher or fork.  Stir.  The milk will thicken upon standing.
