Quick Easy Monkey Tails

Monkey Tails: quick, easy, healthy, casein free, ADHD natural diet recipe using homemade magic shell (coconut oil, chocolate chips), frozen bananas and corn cob picks. Fast and simple.

I’m a little obsessed with homemade magic shell and all its possibilities.  Today I bring you my latest inspiration – a quick, easy, and healthier homemade snack:  Monkey Tails!

I have frozen bananas in my freezer most of the time because they make a great frozen alternative to ice cream using my Yonanas machine.  They’re also handy in smoothies.  These monkey tails give me yet another reason to use frozen bananas and avoid casein.  I love that they are a naturally sweet and healthy ingredient, which makes them more nutritious than their traditional ice cream counterparts.  Monkey Tails fill a Dairy Queen Dilly Bar void for my son on his restrictive ADHD diet.

Using the recipe I found for homemade magic shell (quick and easy instructions below), you can create monkey tails any time you have the ingredients and corn cob picks handy.

  • 2 Tbsps coconut oil
  • 8 oz chocolate chips (I use Enjoy Life to avoid my son’s food sensitivities)

  1. Put the ingredients in a glass container
  2. Zap in the microwave for 20 seconds, then take it out to stir and inspect (make sure it doesn’t overcook and burn)
  3. Repeat step #2 until the mixture is melted and blended completely

You can keep the magic shell in the refrigerator.  When you’re ready to use it, take it out and microwave/stir it at 20 second increments until it’s melted again.

  1. Get out some frozen bananas, homemade magic shell and corn cob picks.
  2. Break the bananas in half, or control the size to be smaller for little children and toddlers.  Or bigger for teenagers and husbands!
  3. Insert corn cob picks into the broken side of the bananas.
  4. Dip the bananas into the magic shell or drizzle magic shell on top.  It will only take a few seconds to harden on the frozen bananas.

Make it more fun by sprinkling crushed nuts, raisins, craisins, coconut shreds, or dye-free sprinkles onto the banana before the homemade magic shell hardens.
