Who Needs Buns?

Have you ever observed a Jimmy John’s Unwich?  It’s essentially sandwich ingredients wrapped in a large piece of lettuce like a soft shell tortilla.

My son has eaten hamburgers and hot dogs without the bun, but sometimes it’s nice to wrap them up.  This method of sandwhich diapering comes in especially handy for Sloppy Joes. Sure, you could splop the meat on the plate and give the kid a spoon, but then you’d be robbing him of the opportunity to be just as messy as everybody else. 🙂

Here’s how you do it:

  • Gently remove the outer leaf from a head of lettuce without tearing it (you’ll get better at this with practice)
  • Splop some meat into the middle of the leaf
  • Wrap up the meat like a present
  • Shove a spear in there to keep it all together (Pickle spears are extra fun – look for an ADHD-friendly pickle that is free from the food dyes and additives outlined in the Feingold diet)

Remember you can do this with hamburgers and hot dogs!  Add your ketchup and other ingredients on top of the meat and WRAP IT UP!!

I’m sure you have a Sloppy Joe recipe that is near and dear to your heart.  Everyone’s mom makes the BEST Sloppy Joe :-).  But since I’m sharing anyway, here is the recipe I enjoyed as a kid.  I always wondered what gave my mom’s Sloppy Joes that special taste.  It’s the CLOVES.  Try it!! 🙂

MOM’S SLOPPY JOES
Ingredients and directions

  • 2 lbs Ground Beef (or turkey)
  • 1 medium-sized Onion, chopped

~ Brown and drain in a medium sized pot, remove from heat

  • 16 oz Tomato Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Vinegar (Apple Cider Vinegar also works)
  • 1/2 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1/8 tsp Pepper
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Mustard (if you are sensitive to mustard, you can skip this ingredient and add one more Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce instead)
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Clove

~ Add these ingredients to the drained meat and onions.  Place back on the burner and cook on medium heat.  Ready to serve once all ingredients are hot.
